Degenerative diseases are always in the spotlight due to developments in contemporary medicine and improving longevity. Degenerative osteoarthritis tends to occur on weight-bearing joints and afflicts life quality significantly. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and surgical correction are the two mainstays of traditional therapy. However, there is concern with the side effects of the former and there is risk attached to the latter. This has resulted in the prospering of alternative therapies in recent years. Clinicians must understand the theoretical basis and evidence-based medicine of these treatments in order to provide an optimal medical service to the patient. This article will discuss alternative therapies for osteoarthritis, focusing on glucosamine, chondroitin and hyaluronic acid. (Full text in Chinese)
