Background and Purpose: The expressed emotions of key people within the families of patients suffering from schizophrenia were surveyed in Taiwan. Methods: Schizophrenia was diagnosed using the DSM-Ⅲ-R (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Ill Revised) definition and 28 key people who take care of family members suffering from schizophrenia were selected and measured using the ”Chinese Five-Minute Speech Sample” (CFMSS). Results: Ten key people had obvious signs of emotion or wept. Eighteen probands laid the blame on others or fate, or felt hopeless. Conclusions: Twenty out of 28 key people had highly expressed emotion. We therefore presume that tense relationships between the key people and their family member suffering from schizophrenia are common. We suggest that psychiatric intervention is necessary to prevent further relapses.
