The main purpose of this study was to explore the relationships between symptom distress, depression, and quality of life (QoL) in hospitalized patients diagnosed with cervical cancer. This was a cross-sectional study involving 100 patients selected by purposive sampling over a seven month interval, and two medical centers, in Kaohsiung and Tainan. The four data collection instruments included: 1) demographic characteristics, 2) the Symptom Distress Scale, 3) the Beck Depression Inventory (Short Form -13), and 4) the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life questionnaire (EORTC-QLO-C30). The results revealed that the most common symptoms of distress in cervical cancer patients were bowel movement changes, fatigue, insomnia, and changes in urinary habits. Depression and symptoms of distress had a positive correlation, while level of education, family income, and QoL had a significant positive correlation. Depression, symptoms of distress, and QoL had a negative correlation, while age and QoL had a significant negative correlation. The predictors of QoL were depression and age, which together accounted for 30.5% of the statistical variance. The findings of this study should help nurses to gain a better understanding of the symptoms, mood, and QoL of patients diagnosed with cervical cancer, to provide them with more professional and individual care, and to improve their QoL.
