Purpose: To investigate the effects of group-based step aerobic (GBSA) training on body composition and physical function in postmenopausal women (PMW) with or without exercise experience. Methods: Thirty-three healthy menopaused women (age: 55-70 yrs) without hormone replacement therapy were designated into exercise group with experience (EGE, n=9), exercise group with non-experience (EGN, n=11), and control group (CG, n=13). EGE had experienced 10 weeks exercise program within 4 months before the study. In the study, EGE and EGN performed 90 min of GBSA program 3 times/week for 10 weeks at high-intermediate intensity; CG maintained their regular lifestyle. Body composition (measured by DXA) and physical function (chair-stand test [CS], and 2-km walk test [2KW]) were tested at baseline and 10th week. Results: After 10-week GBSA intervention, the performance of CS and 2KW index both in EGE and EGE were significantly better than that in CG. The change rate of CS in EGN (30.65%) was significantly improved than those in EGE (9.7%) and in CG (-4.6%). There was no difference in body composition. Conclusion: The 10-week GBSA program significantly improves strength of lower extremities and cardiorespiratory endurance in PMW both with and without exercise experience, meanwhile the enhance rate (effective) of the strength of lower extremities in non-exercise experienced PMW was better.
