As the main actors in modern democratic politics, political parties play an important role in the political democratization process. Influenced by both internal and external factors, party politics in South Korea experienced embryonic, depressed, liberated, and other stages of development that found echoes within the country's constitutional democratization process. In elaborating the constitutional background of South Korea, this paper attempts to describe the development and contemporary status of party politics in that country. By examining the issue in light of the country's foreign and domestic contexts, traditional political culture, and other factors, this paper also seeks to illustrate the basis characteristics of party politics in South Korea. A brief description of the South Korean institutional framework, as contained in the constitution and other relevant laws, will also be presented. The paper concludes the significance of the South Korean experience to the development of political democratization in Taiwan.
