The beginning of the modernization of ink painting in Taiwan can be traced back to Japanese colonization, while it never call enough attention until the so called modern Taiwanese ink painting started to take shape in 1950s when many young artists was exposed to the influences of modernist painting, American Abstract Expressionism in particular. Since then the development of modern Taiwanese ink painting has involved the argument with traditional Chinese ink painting, and modernist painting, and thus making dealing with the topic of modern Taiwanese ink painting impossible unless the latter together are taken in account.
