The interpretation of contemporary images is influenced by the factors of cultural context, viewer, and ways of seeing, and hence results in multiple meanings. Traditional modes of analysis on visual texts are insufficient for interpreting visual images that have multi-facets and multi-meanings. The interpretation of visual images constitutes contemporary image consumers' and producers' concerns. This article attempts to deal with the issues of visual-image interpretation to understand the nature of image interpretation. The objectives of this study are two-folds: (a) to describe the ways to generate meanings of visual images, including the interpretation of viewer, producer's intention, and visual facts of the work; (b) to analyze factors affecting meaning interpretation, involving words, producer's intention, contexts of the viewers, coding, and values of viewers. In the conclusion, the viewpoints concerning visual-image interpretation are summarized, and the significance of learning in visual-image interpretation is expounded.
