Sino-Brazilian Trade Relations and Consequences in Terms of Foreign Political Influence

並列摘要

The recent development of the trade dynamics between Brazil and China is exhibiting an outstanding growth where Chinese became the first Brazilian trade partner since 2009 overcoming the trade value of Brazil-U.S.A. commerce. What are the implications of these new dynamics on international political issues and foreign policy regarding specifically the Brazilian position toward China? Do these dynamics configure a "Hirschmanesque" scenario where an increase in trade leads to foreign policy convergence? In order to evaluate these questions and also the characteristics in the Sino-Brazilian trade dynamics, this article utilize a multivariate regression analysis with time series data comphreended between 1992 to 2007. Considering the foreign policy proximity adopted could be analyzed that China is not converting economic integration into greater political influence in its relationship with Brazil. Other factors such as the Brazilian willingness to seek a Chinese support for its candidacy for a UNSC position and other Brazilian international interests in the foreign political arena seems to have much more weight regard these two nations foreign policy proximity.
