The essay intends to discuss sociologist Zygmunt Bauman’s thought of the reflection and critique about consumer society in the period of liquid modernity. Bauman analyzes the maintenance mechanism and characteristics of consumer society, which esthetic of consumption has took the place of work ethic as the main ideology and guidelines. Bauman views “Instantaneity” and “mobility” as the top-level value in liquid modernity. With the rapid flow of consuming signs, resulting in three crises includes the loss of citizenship, the emergence of “New Poor” and the arrival of individualized society. With his unique thought of humanitarianism and critical thinking, Bauman tried to explain his concern about consumer society and the issues and challenges of human condition.
