The aim of the present study was to understand the prevalence of eating disorders among college nursing students and to investigate the relationship among stress, perfectionism and eating disorders. Participants of this study were 989 college nursing students enrolled in a five-year college program in the greater Taipei area. The instrument used is a structured questionnaire which comprised four parts: background information, the Life Stress Scale, the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS), and the Eating Attitude Test (EAT). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, t-test, Pearson’s correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. The results suggest that 12.8% of the college nursing students are at risk for eating disorders; and stress and perfectionism are positively correlated with eating disorders. When tested which dimensions of stress and perfectionism were most predictive of eating disorders, the results indicate that Concern over Mistakes, Relationship Problems, Organization, Parental Criticism, Major Life Events, Financial Problems and Academic Demands were shown to be the best predictors of eating disorders. There were significant differences in BMI and weight control behaviors with regard to eating disorders. However, there were no differences in different years of study and different levels of sports participation with regard to eating disorders. Nursing students in High EAT group have significantly higher stress and perfectionism than those in the Low EAT group. Suggestions on directions of future research and clinical implications were proposed based on the findings of current study.
