Abstract In the present study, a gardening activity program was designed and implemented in order to explore its effects on the well-being of elderly individuals with dementia. A one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was adopted, with 21 patients with dementia from the Lin-An Elderly Center in Tainan City serving as participants. A 9-week course was planned and the “Well-being Scale of the Elderly with Dementia on Horticultural activities” was used for pretest and posttest in order to test and verify the results. The results showed that “self-achievement,” “interpersonal relationship,” and “positive/negative emotions” values changed significantly. Patients with mild to moderate dementia had greater changes than those with moderate to severe dementia, with the posttest average of “positive emotions” having the highest scores. Mild to moderate dementia and who had past experience in planting or gardening had higher achievements in the various aspects of well-being after participating in horticultural activities. Based on the research results, the researchers made the following concrete suggestions: 1. Train workers with gardening-related skills to facilitate the long-term implementation of the activity though external horticultural therapy teams. 2. Individuals with dementia can be provided with different horticultural activities based on cognition, interests, physical capability, and ability. 3. Horticultural activities can be designed with festivals, retrospective materials, and local elements. 4. Related institutions for the elderly should implement horticultural activities to mitigate the high costs and burdens resulting from an aging society.
