This research intends to study how the public support of crime control in Taiwan. Data are from a national opinion survey conducted in July of 1994 by the Academia Sinica of Taiwan. A total of 759 samples were used for analysis. The finding supports Durkheim's view on criminal punishment. The data show that fear of crime and perception of crime seriousness are positively related to the support of crime control strategies. Apparently, the reactions toward crime and deviance are a result of how one sees social order. Moreover, this research also conclude that, other than marital status, most of the social and demographic variables, such as gender, social class, income, and education, are unrelated to the way that people see criminal punishment. The finding could be a result of the complex nature of public support of criminal punishment.
