A Comparative Study of the Academic Performance of Students from Different Entrance Channels: An Example of Taiwan Hospitality and Tourism College

This study aims to investigate the differences of academic achievements among college students admitted through different entrance channels in the hope of providing suggestions to teaching, counseling and recruiting strategies. The sample of this study was junior students in the four-year programs of Taiwan Hospitality and Tourism College. The multiple entrance channels included individual applications, admission by recommendation and screening, admission based on the results of the joint-entrance examination and admission based on the test results set by individual colleges and universities. The data of students' academic scores were collected for statistic analysis. The results showed that for the first semester, the academic achievements of students admitted by results of joint-entrance exam were significantly higher than students admitted by recommendation and by results of individual entrance exams. Students admitted by recommendation performed significantly better than students admitted by results of individual entrance exams. For the second semester, the academic performances of students admitted by joint-entrance exam results and by recommendation were significantly better than students admitted by individual entrance exams results. In terms of the average academic performance of their first and second year study, students admitted by joint-entrance exam results performed significantly better than those admitted by individual entrance exams results. It is worth noting that in the academic year of 2010, the percentage of students admitted by individual entrance exam results in all junior students of the 4-year programs was the highest. Their academic performance, however, was remarkably poorer than students admitted via other entrance channels. Respecting the fact that admission by individual entrance exam results was the most important recruiting source for the school in question, this study suggested that those students should receive extra encouragement, care and learning consultation. It would assist in increasing the overall education quality.
