Trauma events are difficult for survivor to narrate because they are characterized by complex causes and specificity. Traditional psychological treatment models using oral expression can limit treatment effects due to the unconscious resistance of the survivors. This paper surveys existing literature to investigate the three stages of trauma recovery and the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of expressive art therapy intervention. The first stage-the establishment of a safety mechanism: use indirect and protective expressive method to help survivors release their emotions and sentiments and regain a sense of independence. The second stage-review and mourning: creative activities are used as guidance and review to transform traumatic memories and to explore the value and meaning of trauma to life. The third stage-rebuilding connections with regular life: the art treatment group rebuilds the survivors' trust in the environment and rebuilds connections with the outer world. The discussion and suggestions in this paper can serve as references for clinical psychological treatment practice and future research.
