Relationship between the Remaining Natural Teeth Status and the Chewing Ability of middle-aged and Older Adults in the Kaohsiung Area, Southwestern Taiwan

This study investigated correlations between the chewing ability and the quantity and other functional factors of the remaining natural teeth of middle-aged and older adults in southwestern Taiwan. In total, 296 persons aged 45 years and older who had visited 1 of 6 dental clinics in Kaohsiung City from March to October in 2006 were enrolled in this study All participants were requested to answer the questionnaires and received an 'oral examination to record the numbers of remaining natural teeth and functional natural teeth sorted by the 'functional status of single tooth and the self-reported chewing ability. A logistic regression analysis identified 3 significant predictors of chewing ability among the middle-aged and elderly: age, the number of remaining natural teeth, and the number of functional natural teeth. Therefore, it is important to maintain 20 or more natural teeth or functional natural teeth to possess good chewing ability.
