Clinical Practice Difference between Four-Year Bachelor and Six-Year Doctor of Physical Therapy Programs

The Physical Therapy Department of National Taiwan University embarks on the transition for our formative entry-level education by changing the 4-year degree bachelor's to a 6-year doctoral program. Furthermore, from 2020, there have been clinical practice internships for the 6-year program at the National Taiwan University Hospital. The article analyzes the differences in student's clinical practice performance with 4-year and 6-year learning. The research demonstrates significant differences as the 6-year intern students achieved better outcomes in procedural skills, clinical judgments, organization/efficiency, and humanistic qualities, evaluated with Mini-CEX. As for the professionalism assessment, there was no significant difference between the scores of the midterm evaluation. But in the final evaluation, we found that the students with 6-year education received significantly higher scores in interpersonal skills, communication skills, use of constructive feedback, and stress management. The results of this preliminary report demonstrated the outcome of the change in the entry-level education program, however, more research and long-term assessment are needed.
