The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore the quality of life, and factors related thereto, in ileal neobladder recipients. The 50 subjects of the study were adults of clear consciousness, who had received ileal neobladders, and voluntarily agreed to be interviewed by telephone. Data were collected between March 2004 and July 2004. Three instruments were used in the study: the Taiwanese Quality of Life Questionnaire, symptom experience scale, and personal features questionnaire. The results indicated that the mean score in relation to the dimension of ”importance of” quality of life was 5.32 (SD=0.31), and the mean score in relation to the dimension of ”satisfaction with” quality of life was 4.99 (SD=0.44). Applying stepwise regression, only one factor, work status, explained 15.5% of the variance in importance, and three factors explained 37.2% of the variance in satisfaction. The three factors were symptom experience, incontinence, and marital status, which explained 21.1%, 9.4%, and 6.7%, respectively. We hope that the results of this study may be of use to clinical nurses in helping them to improve the quality of life of ileal neobladder recipients.
