In Southeast Asia hepatitis B is extremely widespread and is a major factor in the development of liver cancer and liver cirrhosis. Since Taiwan began administering hepatitis B vaccinations in 1983 the rate of hepatitis B carriers among the younger generation has been under control, however the ratio of adults carriers remains very high. Currently western medicine employs the use of anti-viral medications and immune regulating drugs, either alone or in combination, to treat hepatitis B, although results are limited. Chinese medicine has spared no effort in its attempts to treat hepatitis B and as the result of accumulated clinical experience has achieved encouraging and fruitful results. I believe that if we can gather enough people’s knowledge and power and continue to do research, that someday we will be able to completely eradicate the hepatitis B virus, thereby diminishing the threat of liver disease to human health.
