The mainstream of treatment for oral squamous cell carcinoma is surgical intervention. Because oral cavity is the main organ for speech and swallowing, wide excision of oral cavity tumor might sacrifice masticatory muscles, jaw bone and soft tissue, which causes a significant impact on quality of life. In light of the morbidity after resection, the aim of the reconstruction should include adequate wound healing and successful functional rehabilitation. In the era of free tissue transfer for oral cancer reconstruction, the application of local flap still serves as the substitute under certain circumstances, especially in medically compromised patients and in patients with smaller defects. The submental island flap is frequently performed for reconstruction of oral cavity defects because of its feasibility. In this manuscript we present two cases of reconstruction of oral defects with submental island flap.
