Abstract Objective: The purpose of this study was to develop testing tools to facilitate diagnosing children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Such tools must be appropriate for Taiwan’s language and culture, and be clinically easy to use. A secondary purpose was to explore attention via different sensory modalities. Thus the Auditory Attention and Response Set (AARS) subtest of the NEPSY was translated and computerized, in the hope that this preliminary study provided some data to evaluate the utility of the AARS in Taiwan and the feasibility of computerizing this task. Method: Three tests of attention were developed based on the English version of the AARS (Chinese AARS, Computerized Auditory Attention Test, Computerized Visual Attention Test; hereafter referred to as Tasks 1, 2, 3 respectively). Study design was Group X Task, two factors mixed design. Groups consisted of ADHD and Control groups. There were 24 5- to 9-year-old children in each group. Results: Children with ADHD performed worse than controls on every task. In general, scores were highest on Task 3, lowest on Task 2. Task 1 discriminated groups with the best accuracy. Conclusion: It is inappropriate to interpret scores from the Chinese AARS using the English norms. Changes made during the translation process and cultural factors both contributed to the inappropriateness of using the English norms. All three tasks can help discriminate children with ADHD from controls. Future studies to examine the reliability and validity of these three tasks, as well as local Taiwanese norms are needed.
