Japanese adverbs, one of the lexically characteristic categories in contemporary Japanese, are frequently used either illegitimately or unidiomatically due not only to their large quantity, but also to the ambiguity as well as discrepancy of the nuances of various usages of the same word. Consequently, gaining a firm grasp of their meanings and uses is extremely difficult for non-native speakers. This study employed ”LARP at SCU,” from which compositions written by beginning and intermediate learners were used as the corpus. It examines, analyzes and illuminates the tendencies for the misuse of Japanese adverbs by students. It also assesses the factors that contribute to such mistakes. Moreover, I will compare and examine the processes of how beginning- and intermediate-level learners acquire proficiency after their errors are found in the course of language learning. It is hoped that the findings of the study will be helpful to teachers of Japanese as a second or foreign language. By pointing out the sets of circumstances under which mistakes in conjunction usage frequently occur, the study should also be beneficial to students of this language.
