On Fang Ruo's Yaoyu's Poetry on Ancient Coins

Fang Ruo (1869-1955) was originally named Cheng with style names Chuqing and Yaoyu. He grew up in Dinghai, Zhejiang Province and specialized in ancient bronze and stone carving script calligraphy and painting. In addition, he was a connoisseur specializing in ancient coins with a nickname "the rich old man of ancient coins". During the late Qing Dynasty, many collectors started to sell their prized collections out of havoc. Fang Ruo seized the opportunity to purchase expensive treasures from several collectors such as Li Zuoxian. Afterward, he and Zhang Naiji and Luo Bozhao became the top three connoisseurs with the famous phrase "Northern Fang, Southern Zhang, and Western Shu Luo". Other than antiquing, Fang Ruo also spent a lot of time researching and writing about antiques with a focus on ancient coins, such as Essences of Ancient Coins, Yaoyu's Poetry on Ancient Coins, Modern Discourse On Ancient Coins, Another Record on Coins, Addendum Record on Coins, Anthology of Old Rain's Building on Ancient Coins, etc. It was apparent how much he favored coins among his vast collection. He wrote 101 seven-character jueju on ancient coins in the tradition of Liu Xihai and Ye Dehui who discussed ancient coins with poems. And yet, Fang Ruo had his own perspective. After studying all 101 poems, this article made several inductive characteristics, elucidated their values, and commented on their shortcomings in hope to shed some lights on Ruo Fang's connoisseurship.
