Towards the Processing of Topological Query of GML-based Geographic Data

To improve the geographic data interoperability in heterogeneous environment and reduce the format incompatibility caused by commercial software, Geography Markup Language (GML), being designed with an ”open” nature, will become the major distributed format for geographic data in the future geospatial web service environment. Other than the design of data standards, the success of the distributed mechanism will also require further investigation on the query capability from the perspective of both processing strategies and functionality expansion. We developed a topological query mechanism for GML data in this paper and argued that the query processing, particularly those with semantic meaning, must consequently consider the requirements on user interface, topological relations and associated algorithms. Research results indicated that the query processing of GML data can take advantage of its XML nature and feature-based encoding structure to generate a GML subdocument that fulfills the given criteria. In the mean time, the logical combination of primitive and self-defined topological relations proves to be able to provide better query resolution and flexibility, so as to meet the possible query demands with various spatial semantics. Since the returned result is naturally open, with the improvement of query capability, it can certainly contribute to the future feature-based and web-based geographic data distributed environment.
