The neural mechanisms of inhibitory control in male adult offenders with drug abuse: an EEG investigation

This study investigated male drug abusers who have stopped taking drugs, aiming to better understand any inhibitory control differences between the male offenders with drug abuse accepting the prison treatment and controls. Using a stop signal task, behavioral results showed that there was no significant difference between the two groups in go correct rate or go reaction time (related to impulsivity), or stop error rate and stop signal reaction time (related to inhibitory control). It was found that the N2 amplitude, relating to early inhibitory control, of the experimental group on failed inhibitory trials was significantly larger than that when they successfully stopped. Compared with control group, the N2 amplitude of the experimental group was significantly greater than that of the control group for failed trials. For the control group, no difference was found in N2 amplitude between trials where they failed or successfully inhibited responding on stop trials. The P3 amplitude, relating to later inhibitory control, was greater in successful inhibitory trials than in failed inhibitory trials in the experimental group, while the control group had no significant difference in the two conditions. This might indicate that the experimental group needed higher resources to achieve the same performance as the control group. The N2 signal may be derived from the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and drug abuse behavior may be associated with dysfunction of ACC, and this may lead to inhibitory control deficiencies, resulting in inability to adequately inhibit behavior associated with substance use, such as cessation of drug use.
