Backlash adjustment can compensate for the wearing phenomenon of worm and worm gear tooth after the worm gear set has worked for a long time. The tooth profile of grinding wheel designed to cut the ZE-type worm is investigated. The worm and worm gear are derived based on the straight edged cutter generation and oversize worm type hob cutter generation correspondently. Computer programs are developed for calculating and simulating the mathematical model and cross-section of grinding wheel and worm-worm gear set. A novel apparatus for decreasing backlash is proposed. The tooth contact analysis of the novel worm gear set used to compensate the backlash is also simulated following the designing parameters of worm gear set and the adjusting parameters. Numerical examples are calculated to present the models, tooth contact analysis, backlash adjustments, new apparatus and kinematical errors of the worm gear set.
