The rapid change of social environment initiates the transformation of traditional family types. The functions of family education have been so much weakened as to decrease the effectiveness of school education and the holistic progress of the nation. With the promulgation and enactment of the Family Education Law, the government has legal ground to actively intervene in family education. This paper reviews the achievements of family education enforced by the government in the past and inquires into the theoretical ideas and philosophical essence of the newly promulgated Family Education Law. It also discusses the ideal functions of the family under the trend of new century and tries to develop several working strategies to activate family education, hoping that the functions of family education be effective and the manpower quality in Taiwan be improved through the reconstruction of family values by the people as well as the effort of the scholastic groups, education administrative agencies, schools and nongovernmental associations.
