The present paper records the gonadal development of six female and five male pond-reared eels (Anguilla japonica). These eleven eels were obtained from eel farms at Pingtung area. It was found that both body weight and body length of every female are greater than those of males. The ovaries examined were mostly composed of yolky oocytes. Among them the most developed one reached the yolk vesicle and early primary yolk globule stages. It might be summarized that the ovary had undergone vitellogenesis since summer (July to August) and reached the maximum mature stage in winter (December to February). It then degenerated in the following spring. The male eels observed were of the similar age. However, they showed some degrees of variation in their testicular maturity-three in the multiplication stage, one in the early spermatocyte stage and the most mature one in the ripe stage.
