This article provides an introduction to nurses of the concept and non-pharmacological interventions in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for insomnia. Insomnia is a chronic condition that not only impacts patients' daily activities and work but their overall well- being. Insomnia may also lead to hypertension, stroke and impair cardiopulmonary function. Effects of current western medical treatment for insomnia is limited because hypnotics and sedatives are only useful for short term treatment, and a more effective behavior therapy takes time. TCM has developed many effective treatments for insomnia that are non-pharmacological interventions. TCM has gained acceptance in current society and nurses may consider incorporating TCM non-pharmacological interventions in the treatment of insomnia in patient teaching.
