The measurement of the tourism performance of settlements and destinations can be possible using several methods which are characteristically based on only one indicator (such as the number of guest nights) or a complex indicator system. In our study we made an attempt to classify the 50 settlements of Hungary to clusters which achieved the highest rates of tourism index based on an earlier published methodology about the tourism index (Aubert et al 2013) and their components. The application of multivariate mathematical-statistical methods can bring noteworthy results on both demand and supply side of tourism research during the evaluation of destinations. In our paper, based on their tourism performance, we intended to standardise with cluster analysis 50 settlements of Hungary with an accentuated role of tourism.. With the help of cluster analysis the similarly typified settlements can be well detected, so the certain settlements can be grouped based not only on the tourism performances, which can be very important both from the point of view of the processes, management and planning of tourism as well.
