The Consumer Health Information on Internet Use Research of College Students - A Case Study of Tamkang University

Health and medical care has always been an important issue. Recently, there has been a rapid increase in consumer health awareness. Therefore, Consumer Health Information (CHI) has been vastly emphasized, which results in the development of associated Internet recourses. This thesis firstly discusses the content and service of domestic health and medical websites to understand health information websites nowadays. Secondly, by doing a questionnaire survey, researcher probes into domestic college students’ usage behavior on CHI on Internet. Finally, according to our research results, researcher makes suggestions and a conclusion on future development and relevant organization for website organizers and associated societies. There were 249 Tamkang university students joined this survey and the result of the research is as the followings: 1.College students have strong demand of CHI on internet. 2.They are interesting in subjects of exercise, fitness, diet and nutrition, and their gender is the main factor when choosing search topics. 3.Their searching and selecting abilities of CHI need to be improved. 4.They lack of correct conception of using CHI on internet. 5.The utilization rate of CHI on internet should be improved. 6.The satisfaction rate of CHI on internet is insufficient. 7.Comparing with results of foreign research, the usage of CHI on internet in Taiwan has less connection with physicians and patients in relation. As to CHI websites present situation, the content and services of general health websites still need to be advanced. For example, avoiding inconsistent frequency of website renewal, publishing commercial advertisement, and insufficiency in self-care and insurance information. Furthermore, the CHI provided by hospital websites is usually incomplete; within the scarcest are health food, recovery information, over-the-counter drugs, medical ethics and various types of insurance regulations. In conclusion, there are following suggestions upon the results of research: 1.Government: Keeping on promoting the evaluation of health information websites and appraising some relevant websites actively. Additionally, it could publicize the outcomes and advices periodically. 2.Suppliers: Highlighting on users’ needs for information, reinforcing the contents of websites, strengthening information to be powerful and innovative, reviewing the services and functions of websites, joining the appraising mechanism provided by the Government and ultimately promoting their websites positively. 3.Libraries: Broadcasting the importance of searching and selecting abilities of health information. Furthermore, they can evaluate, integrate and present existing Internet resources, as well as establish both real and virtual customer platforms of CHI, and introduce some good websites regularly in order to raise their exposure rate. 4.Consumers: Increasing their common sense of health and abilities of searching and selecting information. Do not spread any health information from uncertain sources.
