Background: Physiological functions gradually decline after age 40 and beyond. Women will also experience menopause during this stage and suffer from various physical and mental symptoms. Previous studies showed that regular exercise habit can relieve menopausal symptoms, and improve physiological and psychological health. However, middle-aged women have the lowest physical activity participation rate due to various barriers. Playing exergame requires lots of physical activities and has been considered a new exercise mode. It has been shown to provide moderate intensity of exercise. But most of the previous studies focused on children and adolescents, few has involved middle-aged women. Whether this new mode of exercise can be enjoyed and accepted by this population remains unknown. Purpose: The present study compared exergame and traditional brisk walking to examine the enjoyment and acceptability of the two exercise modes in middle-aged women. Method: Thirty participants were recruited for this study. They performed exergame or brisk walking for 30 minutes in random order. Two experimental conditions were separated by one week. Measurement questionnaires included: Exercise Obstruction Factors Test, Enjoyment Scale, Feeling Scale, Felt Arousal Scale, Borg Rate of Perceived Exertion(RPE), and Future For Use Scale. Result: For the participants, economic factor was the biggest barrier to exercise, followed by time. In addition, both exergame and brisk walking had positive effects for mood. Furthermore, middle-aged women’s enjoyment scores in exergame were significantly higher than brisk walking, but future use scores weren’t significantly different between the two exercise modes. Conclusion: The results of the study suggest that exergame can be enjoyed and accepted by middle-aged women. Playing exergame can be considered an intervention method for promoting exercise behavior in this population.
