Chinese Medicine as Method: How can STS Learn from Chinese Medical practices?

Based on the fruitful STS studies of Chinese Medicine (CM), this paper further explores how the diverse practices and embedded normative frameworks of CM practitioners can enrich STS perspectives. It first introduces and reflects on the studies of development of CM within hegemonic biomedicine. Drawing on interviews with CM practitioners in Taiwan, this paper discerns eight modes of relations between CM and biomedicine in four normative frameworks. Finally, this paper elaborates three strategies for using CM as method: first, making sense of the experiences of CM; second, exploring the multitude of normative frameworks; third, expanding our research perspectives on the basis of CM methods to challenge STS theoretical approaches, such as actor-network theory. This paper aims to expand the scope and imagination of STS on the basis of those situated CM experiences and perspectives.
