Women's fastpitch softball has developed for a long time in Taiwan, but so far, there has been no overall research of the relevant literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to presents a brief literature review of existent studies on women's fastpitch softball to encourage breakthroughs in the research of the sport. This study adopted content analysis and reviewed 163 studies related to women's fastpitch softball that were written in Traditional Chinese (including 104 journal articles and 59 dissertations) to understand the research direction and distribution of women's fastpitch softball studies from 1980 to 2016. Interpretive analysis was conducted from the perspective of current developments in women's fastpitch softball. The results of this study are as follows: (1) Sports biomechanics and sports training accounted for the highest number of publications as research areas; (2) Experimental research and content analysis were the most frequently used research methods; (3) Physical Education Journal published the highest number of journal articles (15 in total) on women's fastpitch softball, and there were 53 times of cross-citation in the journal article samples; (4) Approximately 80% of the authors of the dissertations were active or retired players and coaches, of whom 49 were female and 10 were male, and approximately 50% of the dissertations were later revised and published in journals; (5) A total of 200 authors published their papers in journals, among whom the ratio of females to males was 1:2, with multi-authored publications showing a gradually increasing trend. We conclude that existent studies are incapable of keeping up with current events, indicating that women's fastpitch softball studies urgently need to effectively integrate findings and develop dialogue. This paper recommends promoting mutual conversion and transmission of theoretical knowledge and physical experience by expanding the research field and methods, increasing the number of international comparative studies, and strengthening academic ethics training in the future.
