回歸人性—民族主義中的愛慾驅力

本篇論文企圖透過柏拉圖的愛慾論述，一窺人性中的脆弱與渴望，並以這樣的情感需求為基礎，探究民族主義中諸般同時促使我們創造各式成就，卻也使我們陷入瘋狂與混亂的破壞性力量。因為匱乏，所以我們慾望創造，因為生而為人的不完美，所以我們追求意義和關係。然而，愛慾的驅力如此強勁，不但使我們患得患失，也時常在追求佔有所深愛人、事、物的過程中，顯得如此自我中心，並且表現出一種「自私的無私」，自以為是地為愛奉獻一切，卻忽略了他者的苦難和悲劇很可能正因自己的行動而生。愛戀是狂暴的，民族主義亦顯露威權氣息，這也就是為什麼那麼多的理論家都對之困惑，並企盼尋求超越之道，以馴服不管是愛戀，又或是民族主義的負面影響。但柏拉圖的愛慾論述，以及古希臘史詩、悲劇給予我們的啟示是，必須認識到人的有限性，認識到沒有人能夠站上道德高地，從此超凡入聖。這篇論文最終以憐憫心的培養將能夠使我們看見他者，並且消減民族主義，又或是愛慾中那過份的自我中心傾向為結論，但也承認，我們必須學習與不完美和缺陷相處，甚至，不完美和缺陷正是人之所以為人的條件。憐憫心所扮演的，絕非一項終極解決之道。

This study focus on how eros in Plato’s symposium shaped nationalism in modern times. When we are driven by eros, we may desire to purse something noble and take extraordinary actions; however, chaos and sickness might occur as a result. This double-sided nature of eros is similar to that of nationalism. Passion springing from nationalism not only leads mankind to complete political, economic, scientific and so many other achievements but also provokes exclusion and war, an even more despicable thing. Are we able to suppress or avoid such destructive tendencies of nationalism? Yet, can we call such a thing without paranoid and possessive desire eros? In this study, I will first analyze the creativity and destructivity of nationalism. Then I explore its similarity with eros. In addition, through Plato's theory and ancient Greek epics and tragedies, I will point out the limitations of mankind. Building on these arguments, I try to provide members of nation-states a best possible route to practice, which means get along with the positive and negative nature/consequences of nationalism.
