Rotation of Muscular Activations while Cycling with Different Handle Heights

This study aims to investigate the rotation of muscle activations for different body sites of 20 male bicyclists while cycling under 5 handle height conditions for 20 min. The back and neck/shoulder muscle contractions, as well as subjective discomfort rating of body parts were measured at the initial and cycling after 20 min. Results show that different handle heights caused various cycling postures, therefore resulted in different muscle fatigue levels and discomfort ratings of body parts. When the trunk increasingly inclined forward from upright, back muscle groups (i.e., erector spinae and latissimus dorsi) revealed lower fatigue levels and the upper limb muscles (i.e., trapezius and biceps brachii), oppositely, revealed higher fatigue levels. Results of subjective rating also show that higher handlebar would result in more comfortable in all body parts, whereas the buttocks remained relatively higher discomfort at all 5 handlebar heights (p>0.05). This study suggests that bicycle with higher bars were recommended when considering muscular fatigue and subjective discomfort rating than that with lower bars.
