Comparison of Endoscopic and Open Release on Patients with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

並列摘要

The goal of this study is to compare the result of endoscopic and open release on patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Agee carpal tunnel release sys-tem was introduced into Natinal Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) in 1995. A prospective study of endoscopic carpal tunnel release using the Agee system was done on 100 consecutive patients. For comparison, we collected data of 100 matched patients from 1994-1995 who received the operation of open carpal tunnel release in NTUH. We evaluated the results according to the revo-lution of the symptoms including tingling, numbness, and weakness of the thenar muscle. The patients who received endoscopic carpal tunnel release recovered their strength and function earlier and therefore returned to work sooner than the group of open carpal tunnel release. The average time to return to work was 22.6±3.3 days for the group of endoscopic release and 38.5±5.1 days for the group of open release. The complication rates were 3% in endoscopic group and 10% in open release group. The mean satisfactory rates for open carpal tunnel release and endoscopic carpal tunnel release were 92% and 87% respectively that were not different statistically.
