Economic integration in the Asia-Pacific region is facing unprecedented violent changes right now. Whether in terms of the number of members, the scope of cooperation, rule of the game and strategic planning, differences exist among the different forms of integration as they continue to evolve. This article addresses the key evolutions and current status of U.S. trade policy and U.S. responses and planning against the various concepts and forms of economic integration in the Asia-Pacific region. This article analyzes the choices, motivation, opportunities and challenges for U.S. participation in Asia-Pacific regional economic integration. This article covers four aspects: (1) the logic in U.S. trade policy and current policy debates; (2) the current status of Asia-Pacific economic integration; (3) U.S. strategy for participating in Asia-Pacific regional economic integration and its choices, motivation and planning; and (4) opportunities and challenges for U.S. strategy.
