台灣英語教育之後殖民省思

English Education in Taiwan: The Perspective of Postcolonialism

摘要


本文首先討論後殖民主義之知識與文化霸權論述,然後,藉由分析時間單位「年」,在不同的英語教學環境之下,具有不同的意義為例,來凸顯以英、美等國為中心的英語帝國,對全球英語教育之知識霸權宰制,及如何對像台灣這樣以英語為外語的國家的英語教育的壓迫。接著,經由討論英語成為國際間溝通的語言,其所代表的文化意義,來檢視英語帝國的文化霸權。最後提出對台灣英語教育的啟示。

This paper first briefly discusses the discourses of knowledge and cultural hegemonies of postcolonialism. It then highlights how the global English education is dominated by knowledge hegemony of the English empire centered by the USA and Britain via the analysis of the different meanings of the time unit year in different contexts of English education. Furthermore, it points out how the English empire depresses the countries like Taiwan in which English is taught as a foreign language in English education. Next, the cultural hegemony of the English empire is analyzed and inspected through discussing the cultural significance of English as a lingua franca among countries around the world. Finally, the implications for English education in Taiwan are also presented.
