本論文旨在翻譯哈波.李(Harper Lee)根據一樁發生於美國的真 實社會事件所著之小說— 《梅岡城故事》(To Kill A Mockingbird)當中 的第一章至第九章;筆者除探討翻譯時所遵循之翻譯原則及採取之策 略外,亦將現有之商辛版譯本與筆者譯文相互比較,做翻譯實務之探 討。 本論文共分五章。第一章為緒論,主要說明筆者選擇此書來翻譯 的動機與目的,及本論文研究方法。第二章介紹原著作者及內容, 並簡介譯者及譯著。第三章敘述筆者翻譯此書所依循之翻譯原則, 以及所採取之翻譯策略,舉出實例加以說明。第四章則是翻譯過程 的實務探討,將商辛版譯本與筆者譯本做一比較評析,並對翻譯過 程中的問題做比較深入的研究。最後一章為結論,總結筆者翻譯本 書的心得與建議,期盼能提供給其他譯者作為翻譯上的參考。 從撰寫本論文的過程中,筆者充份體認到翻譯實非易事。儘管過 程艱難,但譯者若能克服困難譯出滿意的作品,那麼譯者心中的喜 悅及成就感,足以讓翻譯期間所投入的精力及時間,得到回報。
This thesis is a study of the author’s translation and one published translation of Harper Lee’s To Kill A MockingBird, a Pulitzer Prize winning novel which enlightens its readers on such issues as racial prejudice, moral tolerance and dignified courage. Related translation theories and strategies are also discussed in the thesis. This thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One describes the author’s motives and purposes to translate this book as well as the methodology applied. Chapter Two is a brief introduction of this novel and its author as well as its translation work and the translators. Chapter Three describes the translation theories and strategies the author adopted. Chapter Four lists translation problems encountered during the translation process and comparison of two translation versions, and some solutions to these problems. Chapter Five concludes this thesis and offers some suggestions for other translators in the future works. The last section is the author’s translation of Chapters 1-9 of To Killing A Mockingbird. Through writing this thesis, the author has realized that translation is indeed a tough job. Nevertheless, it also gives the author joy and sense of achievement when new enlightenments and findings are obtained.
