Examination of Food Peference and Avoidance in Captive Juvenile Red Drum, Sciaenops ocellatus Linnaeus

The red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus Linnaeus, is an exotic aquaculture species in Taiwan. To understand its relations with the organisms in its food complex is the concern of this study, which applied an approach of experimental ecology to determine its food preference and avoidance. For eight food items studied, nereid polychaete (the so-called ragworm) was the most preferred one, and then followed by oyster meat, small squid, mackerel, abalone meat, crab, sea cucumber, and krill. The order of food preference or avoidance is rather relative and dependent on what is present in the food complex. When there were ragworm with other food items, the juvenile red drum had a special preference for the worm and avoided all others. This preference probably is due to the quality of the food item.
