A microcomputer-based system for rapid and accurate measurement of the dimensionsof aquatic organisms is described.The system is composed of a dimension measuringboard,a category selector,and a microcomputer with an internal analog-to-digital convertercard.When the organism is placed on the measuring board,a pointer on the board canmove to touch the dimension of the specimen.A potentiometer circuit in the pointertransforms the displacement of the pointer into a voltage signal which can be collectedby the microcomputer through the analog-to-digital converter.The system can measurethe dimensions of organisms of up to 50 cm in length and/or width for an uncertaintyless than ±0.14 cm.The category selector has four user-defined keys and can be usedto add supplemental information to the dimension data of the specimen.A BASIC programis written to carry out various functions including calibration of the system,dimensionmeasurements,data and file input/output,and on-line statistical analyses of the data.Thissystem can save considerable time and labor on mass measurements,reduce human errorsby eliminating manual reading and recording of data,and improve measurement efficiencyby giving statistical parameters on site.
