由於工資上漲且勞工難求,利用機械作竹材伐採之研討乃屬必要。前此本省曾進行使用小型鏈鋸作竹林砍伐之試驗,結果顯示其作業成本較手工刀具砍伐者高,在勞累程度方向反較不利。因而試行設計適合竹桿伐採專用的機械。有鑒於竹桿為圓形中空之管性,鋸斷伐口時切入深度祇需穿透內壁便可,故此項設計之鋸機置左右對稱之一對圓鋸片,鋸切時兩鋸丹隨竹桿截面團幅張合,一則節省所佔空間,一則減少動力之需要。利用初步製成品進行試驗,獲知此種設計確有被劃預期之優點:(1)工作教率較手工作業者高。(2)使用方便且省力。由於目前尚未進行竹材伐採試驗,故其作業成本未能估出。惟就機具本身及零配件價格比較,此種伐竹機械之作業成本應可期較鏈鋸作業者低廉。

Becauce of the easiness to achieve, small chain saw was first Considered as a substitution for hand tools in bamboo felling experiment. Result of the experiment showed that, the use of small chain saw may improve the working efficiency and lower down its cost, but when viewed from the point of machine power utilization and body fatigue prevention, it is not .an adequate formula. So then, a bamboo feller was designed to meet the requirement. For the purpose of saving time and expenses, the power and power transmission unit of the bamboo feller were adopted from a brush cutter. while the cutting head of this machine was designed using two Small circular saw for culm wall Cutting. Mainly becanse of some manufacturing defects, the behavior of the first bamboo feller wasn't as good as expected. But by tracing the cause of the existing defects, we can visualize a successful bamboo feller after some modification on manufacture and on design have been performed.
