The investigation of safrole in sarsaparilla drinks and coumarin in carbonated soft drinks were undergone during 1985. For each item, 50 commercial products were purchased from nineteen cities of Taiwan, and the quantitation was done according to the A.O.A.C. method. The result showing that eight of 50 sarsaparilla drinks contain safrole which is against the legal allowance amount 1 mg/kg. Only one of the 50 soft drinks contained coumarin, however the quantity didn't beyond the legal allowance amount 2 mg/kg.
