研發風險、研發資源投入與研發技術來源之策略關聯性研究-以臺灣生技製藥業為例

An Analysis of the Strategic Relationship among R&D Portfolio Risk Levels, Research Resources Input, and Technology Sources-The Cases of Biotech & Pharmaceutical Industry in Taiwan

摘要


有鑒於生物技術的突破與發展,勢將引起相關産業後續的研發活動。本研究選擇台灣的生技製藥産業,以該産業前四家高營業績效公司爲對象,探討公司的研發項目風險程度、資源投入與技術來源之間的策略關聯性。經由跨個分析,本研究發現研發項目風險高者,總體營業積效變動性亦大;研發資源投入愈多者、産品的市場競爭愈強;研發技術來源較重視外部技術引入者,産品多樣化程度較高,較重視內部技術來源者,産品相關性較高。本研究進一步以研發風險、研發資源投入與研發技術來源,分別定義公司的『研發組合』、『研發技術策略』及『研發成果』,繼而建構出本研究之理論架構。

Due to the innovation and rapid development in bio-technology, extensive R&D activities in related industries would be triggered. Comparing with the performance of bio-technology related firms and their R&D consequences with information related industries. The biotechnological and pharmaceutical industry in Taiwan has been used to introducing pharmaceutical technology from overseas, being the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for generic drugs, or conducting the innovation for the existing products that meet the demand of markets better, or even conducting the innovation for other non-pharmaceutical products. Instead, it has engaged much less in the development of new biotechnological knowledge or the invention of new products. Besides, in the circumstances of rapid growth of biotechnology and its related industries, it begins to face the strategic challenge of technology research and development, Business in bio-pharmaceutical industry still have long way to struggle in Taiwan This study is interesting in finding out the reasons why these two high-technological industries perform distinctively different, although they got almost the same concerns or supports from society and government. This research focused on the bio-medicine industry and sampled the four leading firms in that industry in Taiwan to conduct cases study. We examined the relationship between the risk levels of R&D portfolio, the input levels of research resources and technology sources for R&D of those firms. We have found that: R&D risk levels positively seated to the variation in performance; research resources input also related to competitiveness of products in market positively; f the technology sources for R&D are from outside of the firm mostly, the variety of its product mix tend to be higher and vice versa. Furthermore, this study has constructed the R&D portfolio strategy of an enterprise can be defined as the risk level of the R&D items chosen by the enterprise and the input level of the research resources. Similarly, the technology strategy can be defined as the R&D risk level and the R&D technology source; while the R&D outcome can be defined as the R&D technology source and the R&D research resource input. In regard to those three parameters relating to the R&D of an enterprise, we find that the R&D portfolio strategy and the technology strategy may affect the R&D outcome jointly.
