Comparative Experiment on Varieties of Kohlrabi

According to the above results based on the observations of experiments, the characteristic of Kinmen Early is attributed to the following four points: 1. Through twice comparative experiments, (the first experiment contains three varieties-Kinmen Early, White Vienna and Kanazawa Late; the second contains five varieties-Kinmen Early, American Early, White Vienna, Peking Late and Kanazawa Late). Kinmen Early variety is acknowledged and certified as the best variety of kohlrabis, because of its early maturity and high yield of edible bulbs. 2. The main purpose of improving vegetables is to increase the yield of the available parts. The principal edible part of kohrabi is bulb not leaves or root. The bulb should have clear, white, and tender flesh, and crisp texture. Kinmen Early has many superior characters such as oval bulbs, small leaves, fine leafstalks, high yield of edible bulbs and good commercial value. 3. Owing to the small leaves and flexible leafstalks, Kinmen Early is suitable to be planted closely, and can, therefore, increase the yield and profit. It can serve as the superlative variety of the intermediate crop in paddy fields in winter season. Owing to the early maturity and high yield, it is welcome by producers in Taiwan. 4. Although Kinmen Early is an early mature variety, seeding can be postponed till the end of November, and can still stand in competition with the late varieties in the fields.
