A Preliminary Assessment of the Nutritive Value of the Sediment across the Continental Shelf North Off Taiwan

Sediments from 10 stations across the continental shelf north off Taiwan were sampled, and their macrobenthos assemblages, physical characteristics, and chemical properties were studied. Based on the grain size distribution, the study area was divided into 1) the inner shelf and upper slope of high organic contents low energetic depositional environment, 2) the outer shelf of low organic contents but high energetic, non-depositional environment, and 3) the middle shelf of fine sand and mud dominated, mild energetic, mixed environment. There was a positive relationship between the organic contents and the fine grain contents of the sediments. The C: N ratio increased with the decrease in organic nitrogen contents. Both the macrobenthos density and the number of species were found to be higher in the outer shelf region where the sediment contained high bioavail able protein. According to the local hydrodynamic environment, benthic-pelagic coupling resulted from a year-roundup welling is apparently the major cause of large macrobenthos assemblages in the coarse grain, non-depositional sediments in the outer shelf region.
