Utilization of Cooked and Uncooked-Ulva Meal as Binders in Litopenaeus vannamei Diets

The aims of this study evaluated the acceptability of Ulva meal as a binder and the efficiency of Ulva meal as shrimp feed binder with different processing method in Litopenaeus vannamei diets. Seven isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated to contain 5, 10 and 20% cooked and uncooked Ulva meal and a control diet to feed L. vannamei for six weeks. Shrimp (initial weight 0.066 g) fed a 10% uncooked-Ulva diet showed the best growth performance in terms of final weight (1.102 g), weight gain (1556.81%) and SGR (6.84%day^(-1)). Shrimp fed a diet with 20% cooked-Ulva showed significant lower weight gain than those fed diets containing 5% cooked- Ulva, 5% and 10% uncooked-Ulva. There was no significantly different weight gain of shrimp fed with control and other treatment diets. 20% Cooked-Ulva diet had the best water stability at 1 hour (96.21%), 2 hour (94.97%), 3 hours (94.33%) and 4 hours (94.14%). Inclusion up to 20% of Ulva meal in diet is acceptable without significant negative effect on shrimp growth performance.
