Effects of banana (Musa acuminata) fruit's peel pectin on the immune responses and disease resistance of the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii

The pectins isolated from fruit's peel of banana, Musa acuminata, was used to evaluate the potential immunostimulation, and the influence on disease resistance in giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii through injection. Prawn received banana peel water-soluble pectins (BWP) via injection at 10, 20 and 40 μg/(g prawn) significantly increased total haemocyte count (THC), hyaline cell (HC), granular cell (GC), phenoloxidase (PO) activity, lysozyme activity, and phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency against Lactococcus garvieae after 1, 3 or 7 days. For susceptibility test, M. rosenbergii was injected with BWP at 10, 20 and 40 μg/(g prawn) after 3 days then challenged with Lactococcus garvieae. The mortality of M. rosenbergii injected with BWP at 20 and 40 μg/(g prawn) were significantly lower than those injected with BWP at 10 μg/(g prawn) and saline control after challenge with L. garvieae for 48~144 hours, and had decreased by 30% and 40%, respectively, compared to the challenged control after 144 hours. It was concluded that the BWP can be used as an immunostimulant for prawn through injection to enhance immunity, and resistance against L. garvieae.
