生物資訊學是整合生物學,電腦科學及資訊科技而成的跨領域學門。目的在於使用電腦來解決生命科學的問題。事實上,生物資訊學之發展與分子生物科學及網路科技是密不可分同步進行的。生物資訊的內容型態繁多,可分為四類:(1)有關生物之結構、形態、顏色等巨觀及微觀之資訊;(2)生物基因體DNA 序列及其特性的資訊;(3)生物大分子如蛋白質及碳水化合物結構與特性之資訊;(4)其他有關生物之生化、生理、遺傳、演化等之特性。生物資訊學之主要工作可分為三部份:(1)生物資料庫及網站之建立;(2)生物資訊的搜尋;(3)生物資訊的分析。生物資訊學之應用範圍廣泛,預期將對生命科學及生物科技之發展,甚至人類文明,做出重大的貢獻。本文著重於介紹現有網路生物資源及生物資訊之取得與利用。
Bioinformatics is the field of science merged by biology, computer science and information technology. The goal is to solve the problems in life sciences through the power of computers. In fact, bioinformatics moved together with the progress of molecular biology and computer/web technology. The contents of bioinformatics are numerous, including (1) Microscopic and macroscopic views of biological structure, morphology and color. (2) DNA sequence and structure information of genomes. (3) Structure and function of biological macromolecules such as protein and carbohydrate. (4) Informations from biochemistry, physiology, genetics and evolutionary biology. Basically, bioinformatics deals with (1) The creation of database and web site. (2) The retrieval of bio-information. (3) The analysis of bio-information. Bioinformatics has been applied extensively in biology and medical sciences. It not only enhances the scientific development but also may bring tremendous impacts to human civilization. The focus of the present paper is on the web resources and applications of bioinformatics.
