For many years educators have focused their attentions on ways to boost student motivation. Despite the fact that educators have sought for various methods to raise the low level of student achievement, many people still don't know what they consider a root cause of students' poor academic performance: a lack of motivation and the negative attitudes to learn. This paper intends to review the research and related studies on issues involving attitudes and motivation in second language learning. It is aimed at exploring the reasons why high motivation and positive attitudes play important roles in learning a second or foreign language. The study also provides valuable insights into the field of second language acquisition.
